German Union’s Chief Jens Spahn Calls for Prudence in Israel’s Military Response
Jens Spahn, the leader of the German Union’s faction, has emphasized the importance of the government’s cautious approach in the debate over weapon deliveries to Israel. According to Spahn, the government consistently handles the issue with prudence and a sense of responsibility and will continue to do so. He urged the Israeli government to swiftly deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, while also reiterating the CDU’s stance that Israel has the right to defend its citizens against the aggression of the Islamist Hamas.
Spahn’s remarks were echoed by Jürgen Hardt, the foreign policy spokesperson for the Union’s faction in the German Bundestag, who also rejected calls to stop weapon deliveries to Israel. Hardt stressed that Germany supports Israel in ensuring its own security, as the Hamas terrorist organization has yet to release all hostages or cease its rocket attacks on Israel.
However, Hardt also called on Israel to provide transparency on its plans for the future of the Gaza Strip, citing the increasing international concerns over the situation in the region. He emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is unbearable and urged the Israeli government to deliver humanitarian aid on a much larger scale, while also explaining its plan to establish a Palestinian civil administration without the involvement of the Hamas.
