A leading official of the refugee protection organization Pro Asyl has strongly criticized a proposed two-year suspension of family reunification for subsidiary protected individuals.
According to Karl Kopp, the organization’s managing director, the law will have devastating effects on the family lives of subsidiary protected individuals. “Families will be separated for years and many will be destroyed. This will make integration more difficult. The affected groups are typically vulnerable, with those often forced to remain in their countries of origin or embark on perilous, sometimes deadly, flight routes” he told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
Kopp also accused the CDU and CSU of hypocrisy, pointing out that they have consistently emphasized the importance of families, only to now propose a measure that would have the opposite effect. The proposed bill is set to be presented to the cabinet on Wednesday by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU.
