German Politician Backs Digital Cultural Submissions on Major Platforms, but with Conditions

The newly appointed chairman of the German Bundestag’s Committee on Culture and Media, Sven Lehmann of the Green Party, has expressed support for the idea of introducing digital cultural submissions on major platforms like Google, as proposed by the Federal Minister of Culture, Wolfram Weimer.

Lehmann emphasized that the revenue generated from such a platform must be directly allocated to the support of culture and the arts, stating, “I find that very good and supportive, but the earnings must be made available to the cultural promoters and creators one to one.” The politician also emphasized the need for the Minister of Culture to stand up for artistic freedom and demonstrate a clear stance against cultural aggression.

Furthermore, Lehmann called for a portion of the special funds to be allocated towards the renovation of cultural buildings. He also emphasized the importance of preserving the Culture Pass for young people.

In addition, Lehmann advocated for the strengthening of local journalism, highlighting the lack of progress in this area over the past few years. He emphasized the need for targeted support for publishing houses and local journalism, citing the example of financial assistance to local redactions to enable the hiring of journalists.
