Germany’s Refugee Accommodation Facilities Show Significant Improvement in Availability of Space
According to a recent survey by the German news magazine Focus, the country’s 16 federal states have a significantly higher number of available spaces in their refugee accommodation facilities compared to the same period last year. As of now, out of a total of 126,307 available spaces, 69,322 are currently occupied, which translates to an occupancy rate of 54.9 percent.
This marks a significant improvement compared to the same month in 2024, when the occupancy rate was at 63.6 percent, with nearly two-thirds of the available spaces in use. At that time, the states had a total of 127,439 spaces, slightly more than the current capacity.
Thuringia has seen the most significant decrease in occupied spaces, with a drop from 81 percent in May 2024 to 12.46 percent in the current period. North Rhine-Westphalia also reported a notable decline, from 65 percent in May 2024 to 46.2 percent in May 2025. In Berlin, the occupancy rate has decreased from nearly 100 percent in May 2024 to around 90 percent currently.
Baden-Württemberg is an exception to the national trend, with an occupancy rate that has actually increased from 77 percent in May 2024 to 78.1 percent in the current period.
