A German Green Party politician, Anton Hofreiter, has expressed regret over the lack of climate change discussion during the election campaign. In an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” (Monday edition), Hofreiter stated that the absence of climate change as a major topic in the campaign had indeed harmed the party.
During the last federal election in 2021, climate change was a central theme, particularly due to the engagement of Fridays for Future. “That gave us a boost at the time” Hofreiter said. He had wished for the Greens to put the topic more prominently on the agenda. “That is a failure of the entire party” Hofreiter stated, adding that it is not just a matter of party leadership.
Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck has publicly backed Hofreiter, saying he had a super election campaign. Hofreiter recalled that the Greens were still at around 8 to 9 percent in the polls in the autumn. “From my perspective, it is not the right time for personal debates” Hofreiter said.
