According to a provisional estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the German hospitality industry saw a real decrease of 2.1% and a nominal increase of 1.0% in revenue in 2024 compared to the previous year.
The real turnover in the hospitality sector was only higher in three of the eleven months (February, March, and November 2024) compared to the same period in the previous year. In the remaining eight months, the real turnover decreased, according to the statisticians.
The catering industry was particularly affected, with a real turnover decrease of 3.7% in the first eleven months of 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year. In contrast, the real turnover in the accommodation sector decreased moderately by 0.4%.
Compared to the pre-Corona year of 2019, the real turnover in the hospitality sector is expected to have decreased by 12.6% in 2024, while the nominal turnover increased by 10.4% due to significant price increases.
In November 2024, the hospitality sector saw a real increase of 3.9% and a nominal increase of 3.8% compared to the previous month, according to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office. Compared to November 2023, the real turnover decreased by 0.1% and the nominal turnover increased by 2.5%. The real turnover in November 2024 was still 14.1% lower than in November 2019, the pre-pandemic comparison month. In contrast, the nominal turnover was 8.4% higher.
In the catering industry, the turnover in November 2024 was 3.4% higher than in the previous month, according to Destatis. Compared to November 2023, the turnover decreased by 1.8% and was 17.1% lower than in November 2019. Hotels and other accommodation providers saw a real increase of 5.2% in November 2024 compared to the previous month, and a 3.2% increase compared to November 2023. The real turnover in November 2024 was still 4.9% lower than in November 2019.
