80-Hour Workweeks in China's Hidden Factories

Chinese Workers in BYD Factories Report Long Working Hours

A recent report has shed light on the grueling work schedules of employees in BYD factories in China. According to the report, workers in these facilities are often required to work between 50 and nearly 80 hours a week.

One worker, who spoke to the FAZ in Wuwei, Anhui, described the demanding work schedule, saying he can choose between one to two weeks of continuous work, followed by a single day of rest. Internal WeChat messages, cited by the FAZ, revealed a 14-day stretch of non-stop work in June, followed by a day of rest before another 14-day period of continuous labor.

The employees, as reported, work daily hours of 9 to 11, far exceeding the 40-hour week mandated by Chinese labor law, which also limits overtime to a maximum of 36 hours per month. Chinese labor rights activists have strongly criticized the reported work practices, citing the need for more stringent regulations and worker protections.
