55 Years Later: New Suspect in Shocking 1970 Munich Jewish Center Attack Emerges

Munich prosecutors are following a new lead in the unsolved arson attack on the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde community center in Munich, in which seven Jews were killed in February 1970. According to a report in Der Spiegel, the lead has led to a deceased German man who was involved in Munich’s criminal milieu. The man, who was involved in several crimes in the 1970s, is said to have held offensive antisemitic and right-wing extremist views. It is also being investigated whether he had contact with the organized neo-Nazi scene. The investigation was triggered by a tip-off to the Antisemitism Commissioner of the Bavarian Justice at the General Prosecutor’s Office in Munich. According to the tip-off, the Munich criminal himself made statements about the attack while alive. Whether he was the arsonist will now have to be clarified by the investigators, as well as whether there are any surviving accomplices or witnesses. The Munich General Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that a new case of seven counts of murder has been initiated. However, the agency is not currently making any further comments due to investigative reasons.
