400 Arrests in One Night

Berlin saw hundreds of people arrested at the turn of the year 2024/2025, just like the previous year. The police reported at least 390 arrests and adjusted their preliminary figures for New Year’s Eve once again.

According to Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD), 15 police officers were injured, with one of them severely hurt. He was apparently hit by an illegal grenade on the corner of Prenzlauer Allee and Danziger Straße and had to be operated on in a hospital. Spranger demanded that all crimes from the night be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), tweeted that the police and fire department’s deployment had allowed most Berliners to “peacefully” celebrate the new year of 2025. “The deployment has also prevented worse, as shown by the arrests of around 400 suspected criminals” Wegner said. “Shooting at police officers with grenades, attacking emergency and rescue services with pyrotechnics or stones – it’s unimaginable.”

We will never accept such attacks on the emergency services and will maintain high pressure on the investigation in the aftermath. “These criminals must feel the full force of the rule of law” the CDU politician wrote.
