Agricultural Product Producer Prices in Germany Rise by 4.1% in November Compared to the Same Month a Year Earlier
The German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Monday that the producer prices of agricultural products in November 2024 were 4.1% higher than in November 2023. In October 2024, the year-on-year change was 3.0%, and in September 2024, it was -0.1%. Compared to the previous month, October 2024, the producer prices of agricultural products increased by 1.3% in November 2024.
The prices for products from plant and animal production, as already seen in the previous months, developed oppositely in November 2024. While the prices for plant products decreased by 4.0% compared to the same month a year earlier, the prices for animal and animal products rose by 9.6%. In comparison to the previous month, the prices for plant products increased by 1.4% and for animal products by 1.3%.
The decline in plant product prices by 4.0% compared to the same month a year earlier was mainly due to the decreased prices for potatoes, which were 31.7% lower in November 2024 than in November 2023. In October and September 2024, the year-on-year change was -38.3% and -41.2%, respectively. Compared to the previous month, October 2024, the potato prices increased by 14.4%.
Fruit prices rose by 23.1% compared to the same month a year earlier, with the prices for table apples increasing by 24.1%. The producer prices for vegetables decreased by 1.8% compared to the same month a year earlier, with the prices for cauliflower and cabbage decreasing by 29.6% and 13.2%, respectively. Grain prices were 3.9% lower in November 2024 than in November 2023, with the prices decreasing by 4.1% in October 2024 compared to the same month a year earlier. Significant price increases were seen for cucumbers and tomatoes, which increased in price by 32.1% and 20.1%, respectively, over the past year.
Rapseed, a type of oilseed, increased in price by 19.5% in November 2024 compared to the same month a year earlier, and by 16.3% in October 2024 compared to October 2023. The prices for oilseeds in general were 7.5% higher in November 2024 than in the same month a year earlier. Wine prices were also higher in November 2024, but only moderately, at 0.9%. The prices for fodder plants continued to decline, decreasing by 10.1% in November 2024 compared to the same month a year earlier, and by 14.7% in October 2024 compared to October 2023.
The price increase for animal and animal products of 9.6% in November 2024 compared to the same month a year earlier was mainly due to the increased prices for milk. The milk price was 23.3% higher in November 2024 than in November 2023, and increased by 3.0% in October 2024 compared to October 2023. The price for eggs decreased by 2.1% in November 2024 compared to the same month a year earlier, and by 1.6% in October 2024 compared to October 2023. The prices for animals were 1.1% higher in November 2024 than in November 2023, with the prices for cattle increasing by 20.2% and the prices for pigs decreasing by 8.0%. The prices for poultry were 1.6% higher in November 2024 than in November 2023, with the prices for chicken increasing by 5.6%. The prices for other poultry, such as ducks and turkeys, decreased by 4.4% over the past year, according to the office.
