Worst Economic Downturn in Decades: Three Quarters of Germans Despair

Most Germans look pessimistically at the future of the domestic economy.

According to a survey commissioned by “Sunday of the World”, 77 percent of respondents rate the current economic situation of the country as bad or very bad. Only a few believe in a recovery in the coming year, with 63 percent of those surveyed expecting the industrial location to be less attractive in the next ten years than in the past decade.

The assessment matches the results of the current “Industry Barometer” of the consulting firm EY, which was reported on by “Sunday of the World”. According to this, the German industry lost around 4% of its turnover or €25 billion in the period from January to September 2024 compared to the previous year, alongside the elimination of 50,000 jobs. The consultants speak of an “industrial recession” because the turnover has been declining continuously for five quarters. Since 2019, the industry in Germany has laid off more than 150,000 jobs according to EY.

When asked which party could make the country most attractive for the industry, 32 percent of respondents in the YouGov survey named the CDU, followed by 31 percent who said no party. 14 percent of those surveyed believed the AfD could support the industry. The other parties received less than 10 percent of the approval. The SPD received 9%, the Greens 6%, and the FDP 4%.
