FDP’s Deputy Chairman Wolfgang Kubicki sets a minimum election target of 10% for the Liberals and sees several potential successors for party chief Christian Lindner.
“We’ll be two-digit” Kubicki told the “Stern”. “I’m definitely making my 40th election campaign, I know that the mood can suddenly take a dramatic turn.” As the new year begins, people will reorganize themselves. “The old is gone, it will be struck off, they will focus on what’s to come. I say that in my own, non-polemical way: Citizens are facing the question – prosperity or renunciation, happiness or depression.”
The 72-year-old Liberal brought several FDP politicians into the game as potential successors to party chief Christian Lindner. When asked if there were even possible candidates, Kubicki replied, “Aside from the fact that this question doesn’t even matter right now: dozens.”
He, however, ruled out a bid for the next party leadership. “I will definitely not be Christian Lindner’s successor. But Johannes Vogel, Konstantin Kuhle, Christian Dürr, and many others could” said Kubicki. “I’m now standing before my last legislative period. And in the party, it will also eventually be over for me. I will definitely not be the FDP’s deputy chairman in the next Bundestag election.”
Kubicki, however, announced that he would like to remain a Bundestag Vice President after the election. “The job is fun for me. Moreover, I’m responsible for the Bundestage’s construction sites. And I want to see those through to the end.
