A breakthrough is in sight in the tariff and spark conflict at Volkswagen. After five days and more than 60 hours of negotiations, the company and the IG Metall union are on the verge of an agreement in the dispute over wages and the cost-cutting program, according to various media reports on the early evening of Friday.

According to “Bild”, two VW plants are on the verge of being shut down: the Dresden site is to be reoriented or closed, while Osnabrück is to be handed over to a defense contractor. In contrast, the VW factories in Zwickau and Emden are not to be closed.

Meanwhile, the “Manager Magazin” reported that in the long term, more than 10,000 jobs are to be cut, mainly due to natural fluctuations such as retirements. The FAZ reported on its website in the early evening that more than 35,000 jobs are to be lost at VW by the year 2030.
