One Week After Emergency Landing, Swiss Airlines Mourns Death of Crew Member

Swiss International Air Lines has announced with deep sadness that a crew member has passed away, a week after the emergency landing of one of its flights in Graz, Austria. The young man, who was severely injured in the incident on December 23, had been receiving intensive care on the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The flight, LX1885, from Bucharest to Zurich, had to make an emergency landing in Graz due to smoke development in the cockpit and cabin. The exact cause of the smoke release is still unknown.

In a statement, Swiss CEO Jens Fehlinger expressed the company’s deepest shock and condolences over the loss of the crew member. “We are all deeply shocked by the death of our colleague. The news leaves us in a state of deep sadness and numbness. Our thoughts are with the family of the young man, whose pain must be immeasurable. I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the entire SWISS staff. We will do everything in our power to support them in these extremely difficult hours.”

COO Oliver Buchhofer also extended his condolences, saying, “It’s a black day for all of us. Losing a member of our SWISS team leaves me deeply disturbed and very affected. We stand together in this difficult time and will do everything to find the causes of the incident together with the relevant authorities. We have many questions and want answers. Our thanks also go to the local authorities and, in particular, to the rescue teams that supported our passengers and crew in Graz so professionally.
