'Strong Security Package' Demanded After Magdeburg Attack

After the Magdeburg attack, Andrea Lindholz, the Union’s deputy faction leader, has indicated a possible agreement on remaining parts of the security package and called for a request to the Mediation Committee.

“We must and can better protect our population. For this, we need a strong security package that gives our authorities effective powers” Lindholz told the Rheinische Post. This primarily includes the minimum storage period for IP addresses, which the Union has been demanding for many years. “But also, the authorities’ powers for automated facial recognition and the internet comparison of police data, which exploit the constitutionally possible, must be regulated” the CSU politician said.

“If Mrs. Faeser is serious, she must now call the Mediation Committee for the security package. Then there is a chance to achieve a real breakthrough for security in our country in the remaining weeks before the federal election” said the deputy chair of the Union faction. The Union has been demanding this for years. “It was the SPD, Greens, and FDP that did not join in here. If the SPD is now really moving, that’s good. But if they only have in mind symbolic adjustments to the law, the Union will not be ready for that” Lindholz added.

Earlier, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had expressed support for immediately passing outstanding bills on internal security after the Magdeburg attack.
