Even with the new Bundestag election, the reasons for the collapse of the Ampel coalition remain, according to SPD parliamentary group chairman Rolf Mützenich’s words.
“Every new government will have to face the same challenges that the Ampel coalition failed to overcome” he told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. The main reason the government of SPD, Greens, and FDP failed was the funding of aid for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. “Every new government will have a problem if these funds have to be taken from the core budget.”
Future challenges also include the shortage of skilled workers, simultaneous job cuts, investment stagnation, poor economic data, and the war in Ukraine. “And all with limited funds” Mützenich warned. “A complex structure that cannot afford simplistic answers.”
He is convinced that with CDU’s candidate for Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, the debt brake will be changed. “Mr. Merz has already ruled that out, in the meantime” Mützenich told the RND. A reason could be that the future US President Donald Trump will not spend as much money on Ukraine as before. “I am sure that the next government will address this issue very quickly with the Bundestag and the states.
