German Red Cross President, Gerda Hasselfeldt, in the debate on a social service obligation for young men and women, initially advocates for a strengthening of the voluntary service in Germany.
She welcomes the discussion on a compulsory service, “because it leads to thinking about social cohesion and engagement” Hasselfeldt said to the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition). “However, one should first consider whether one does not first utilize the potential of the existing voluntary services.”
This way, the attractiveness of the voluntary service can still be increased. “A higher compensation and the recognition of service times for studies are instruments” Hasselfeldt said. At the same time, the Red Cross President stated: “If, in the future, a military service model is implemented and all young people are addressed, the letter should also include hints at the possibilities of the voluntary service outside of the Bundeswehr. Ideally, there should be active counseling as well.” Many young people are ready to complete a voluntary service. “But they do not know where and under what conditions.
