Before the New Year’s Eve and with a view to the current security situation, the chairman of the Police Union (GdP), Jochen Kopelke, has called on the parliamentary groups in the still-existing Bundestag to pass promised security laws before the premature new election.
“There are majorities in the Bundestag that could achieve this” he told the broadcaster “Tagesschau 24”. In this sense, his appeal to CDU, SPD, Greens, and many who wanted to unite behind them was: “Bring the security laws on the way, so that we don’t have to wait for a year for improvements in the legal and personnel aspects of internal security.” This couldn’t be explained to any voter.
The police are not only increasingly in demand on New Year’s Eve. “The conflicts on the street are increasing. We see that in the police criminal statistics” Kopelke said. “Every day in Germany is used to protest politically in Germany. The political camps are colliding. It leads to violent violence.” It is the task of the current and future federal government to bring this back in line.
The union chairman also demanded better personnel and material equipment: “You have to invest money in internal security. The population wants that. The situation also demands that” Kopelke added.
Despite everything, the police are optimistic about New Year’s Eve. They have a large number of colleagues on duty. “Clear mission: security, rescue forces protected, and good start to the new year.” This belongs to the task and daily routine of the German police.
Kopelke also renewed his demand for a general pyrotechnic ban to improve security on New Year’s Eve. He accused the Federal Ministry of the Interior of shifting the responsibility to the states.
