In October 2024, the construction of 18,600 apartments was approved in Germany. This was 18.0 percent or 4,100 fewer approvals than in October 2023, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Wednesday.
From January to October 2024, a total of 175,800 apartments were approved. This was 19.5 percent or 42,600 fewer than in the previous year. The results include approvals for apartments in new residential and non-residential buildings as well as new apartments in existing buildings.
According to Destatis, a total of 14,800 apartments were approved for new residential buildings in October 2024, which was a 23.0 percent or 4,400 fewer apartments than in the previous year. From January to October 2024, a total of 143,500 new apartments were approved, which was a 22.2 percent or 41,000 fewer than in the previous year.
The number of approvals for single-family homes decreased by 23.6 percent (-9,800) to 31,800. The number of two-family homes with approved apartments decreased by 13.6 percent (-1,700) to 10,700. Even in the numerically strongest building type, multi-family homes, the number of approved apartments decreased significantly by 22.2 percent (-26,300) to 92,000 apartments.
