Georgian Football Icon Elected as New President, Blending Sports and Politics
In a surprising turn of events, former FC Zürich striker Michail Kawelaschwili has been elected as the new president of Georgia, a move that highlights the often blurred lines between sports and politics.
Kawelaschwili’s rise to the top post is a personal milestone, but it also reflects the country’s desire for a leader who can bridge the gap between East and West. The 53-year-old, born in the small town of Bolnissi in 1971, has a unique profile, speaking Georgian, Russian, and German, and has always been open to Western values.
From the Bolzplatz in Bolnissi to the Big Stage
Kawelaschwili’s passion for football was evident from an early age. He began his professional career in 1990 with Dinamo Tiflis, winning the Georgian championship three times. He then moved to Russia, playing for Alanija Wladikawkas and helping the team win the Russian title in 1995.
Manchester City’s signing of Kawelaschwili in 1995 marked a significant step in his career, as he gained valuable international experience in the Premier League. Although he only spent a year in England, playing 28 games, the experience was invaluable.
Kawelaschwili’s next stop was Switzerland, where he played for Grasshoppers Zürich, scoring 20 goals in 59 games over two years. He then joined FC Zürich, playing for the team for three years before moving to other Swiss clubs, including FC Luzern, FC Sion, and FC Aarau.
In 2006, he signed with FC Basel, a team he had previously played for on loan. Kawelaschwili’s international career with the Georgian national team spanned 11 years, with 46 appearances and nine goals.
A Friend Becomes a President
Giuseppe Laisa, a long-time friend of Kawelaschwili, is thrilled about the election. “We met at FC Basel, and we’ve remained close friends ever since” Laisa said.
“He’s a driven and correct person – helpful, reliable, and persistent. He’s always fought for his goals, whether in football or politics.”
The two share a love for football, as well as many fond memories. Kawelaschwili often spoke about the significant impact his time in Switzerland had on his life, not only in football, but also in learning the language and adopting European culture.
A Western-Oriented President
Kawelaschwili is seen as a representative of a modern and open-minded Georgia. His fluency in German and his positive attitude towards Europe set him apart from many of his predecessors. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the importance of dialogue with Western nations.
Georgia, a country with a rich history, is looking to the future, and Kawelaschwili sees the key to success in cooperation with the international community. With clear words and a vision for a strong and united Georgia, he has won many over.
From Zürich to Tiflis – A Success Story
Despite his political career, Kawelaschwili has never forgotten his sporting roots. His former coach, Raimondo Ponte, describes him as someone who not only valued the game but also the people around him. Today, Ponte is proud of one of his former players’ many achievements.
With Michail Kawelaschwili as president, a new and exciting chapter begins for Georgia. The former FCZ striker brings experience, determination, and the ability to bridge the gap between East and West.
