The President of the German Metalworkers’ Federation, Stefan Wolf, hopes for a reform of the minimum wage from the next federal government.
“I’m not against the minimum wage, I’m for it only starting at the age of 27” Stefan Wolf said to the partner newspapers of the “New Berlin Editorial Society” (Saturday editions). By implementing such a reform, it would make it unattractive for the young to take on any casual job, instead of qualifying themselves, according to Wolf’s argument.
The minimum wage is partly responsible for the high number of young people without a degree. Many would initially “just take a job” after an unsuccessful job application for an apprenticeship and then realize that they don’t do so badly with the minimum wage, Wolf said. “I am convinced that we have so many young people, at least 2.6 million, without vocational training, because of this” he explained.
