After the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market with several dead and dozens of injured, the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff (CDU), is demanding political consequences. “What happened in Magdeburg must give rise to corresponding political evaluations” Haseloff said in the evening in Magdeburg to journalists.
It is quite obvious that there was a “temporal synchronization”, not just in relation to Christmas, but also in reference to the attack on the Berlin Christmas market eight years ago. He welcomes the fact that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) have announced their arrival for Saturday, said Haseloff.
The Prime Minister again confirmed two fatalities and dozens of injured, after a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia drove an SUV into a crowd on the Christmas market. Newspapers such as “Bild” and “Magdeburger Volksstimme” had previously reported on 11 dead and up to 80 injured.
The suspected perpetrator was arrested immediately after the attack. He had first entered Germany in 2006 and had a residence permit without a time limit. He was last active as a doctor in Bernburg.
