The German government will continue to operate its Twitter accounts for now, even after Elon Musk’s takeover of X/Twitter, a deputy government spokesperson, Christiane Hoffmann, said in Berlin on Monday.
The handling of the platform has been a recurring question since the takeover, Hoffmann said. It’s generally important to weigh the pros and cons of social media, and it’s a very high value to be able to spread information as widely as possible, she added.
Ultimately, social media is an important component of the German government’s communication strategy and its aim to explain government policies, Hoffmann said. “We’re certainly watching what’s happening on X with great concern.” However, it’s also important to weigh the consequences of leaving these channels and no longer being able to reach users. “And in that weighing, we’re currently of the opinion that it’s right to stay there” the government spokesperson said.
