EU’s new foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticizes Germany’s Ukraine policy. “Ukraine needs more effective weapons, more ammunition, so that it is strong when negotiations come” Kallas told the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Saturday edition).
“The stronger Ukraine is militarily, the stronger it is at the negotiating table. That should be our focus” she said. Scholz has repeatedly rejected the delivery of the long-range missile Taurus to Ukraine.
Kallas also criticized the Chancellor for not declaring a Ukrainian victory in the defense war against Russia as a goal. “I don’t understand why one is afraid to use these words” she said. It’s just simple questions. “Do you want international rules to apply? Do you want a world where strength doesn’t triumph over right? Are the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity in the UN Charter and should they be respected? If you answer all these questions with ‘yes’, then you must want Ukraine to win.”
Kallas advocates for Ukraine’s Nato membership to protect the country from Russia. “I believe Nato membership is the security guarantee that works” she said. Like a series of other state and government chiefs in the alliance, Scholz sees the prospects for Ukraine’s Nato membership in the near future as skeptical.
