The FDP is setting its sights on a “yes” to nuclear power, but only if the state doesn’t have to pay for it. “We Free Democrats want to enable the use of climate-friendly future technologies like nuclear fusion and safer nuclear power plants without subsidies” the draft of the FDP’s election program states, according to the newspapers of the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Tuesday editions) report.
The state should only provide the legal framework for operation: “We want to legally enable the restart of existing nuclear power plants and leave the decision to the operators.”
Additionally, the FDP is advocating for a stop to the subsidies for renewable energy. The justification is: “Since more than 60 percent of the electricity production already falls on these today, the EEG subsidies for new plants are no longer justified.”
Electric companies should be allowed to put their nuclear power plants back into operation – but they would have to forgo state subsidies. The FDP only wants to establish the legal foundations for the restart and “leave the decision to the operators”.
