Former Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, will now represent his country at the United Nations in New York.
“I’m very grateful to President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha for the great trust they’ve placed in me” Melnyk said to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Sunday editions).
“The UN must play a stronger role to end the Russian aggression war and achieve a just peace for Ukraine with security guarantees. I will work tirelessly in New York, side by side with our German friends and allies, to achieve this important task.”
Melnyk added, looking at Russian President Vladimir Putin, “The Federal Republic of Germany plays a decisive role in this context to force Putin to stop his barbaric campaign.”
During his time as ambassador in Berlin, Melnyk was controversial due to his harsh criticism of the government coalition and what he saw as too slow arms deliveries. In October 2022, he moved to Kyiv, where he became Vice Foreign Minister. In June 2023, he was appointed Ukrainian Ambassador to Brazil, from where he is now moving to New York.
