Few weeks before the inauguration of the new US President Trump, the future Ukrainian representative at the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, looks optimistically at his influence possibilities. Trump has said that he will end the war within 24 hours, Melnyk told the RTL/ntv editorial team.
“We are taking it literally” Melnyk said. He hopes that “the Americans, including the new head of state in Washington, understand how terrible this war is, that it’s really something that can no longer be tolerated. And then find ways to influence Putin, so as to force him to peace.”
He hopes that the new US President Donald Trump can visit Kiev as soon as possible to see with his own eyes what it means “to have a war in the middle of Europe in the 21st century. How strongly the civilian population is suffering. And if we succeed, and the new president really feels it, if he has to spend the night in a bunker because of the air alarm that almost rings out every night now, that will already contribute to Donald Trump understanding.
