Before the special meeting of the Interior Committee on the Magdeburg incident, Lars Castellucci, the deputy committee chair of the SPD, clearly expressed his expectation. “I hope to get answers to four pressing questions” Castellucci told the Bayern media group’s newspapers.
“Was the perpetrator profile assembled by the authorities in a sufficient manner? What intervention should have taken place? How must we legally, especially in the digital space, track down the perpetrator so that someone like that can’t post hate messages on the internet without consequences? And how did the security gap on the Christmas market occur?” It’s not about attributing blame to the authorities, he added. “The only one to blame is the perpetrator.”
The Interior Committee met at 1 pm for the special session, with federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), BND President Bruno Kahl, and BKA Chief Holger Münch expected to attend. Castellucci said, “We need a thorough analysis together with the authorities now. Introducing premature, election campaign-related ideas that are not grounded in fact won’t achieve anything for anyone. It only stokes the flames of those who want to tear our society apart. What we need now is more inner cohesion.
