German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) spoke by phone with the future US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels, discussing security policy challenges in Europe. Government Spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced this on the evening of the day before yesterday.
Both parties agreed that the Russian war against Ukraine has been going on for too long and that it is now a matter of getting on the way to a “fair, just, and sustainable peace” as soon as possible. The Chancellor also reconfirmed, as reported by Hebestreit, that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia for as long as necessary.
Scholz last spoke with Trump in mid-November to congratulate him on his election win. At the time, the two discussed the state of the German-American relationship and current geopolitical challenges. They also touched on the topic of a return of peace to Europe, with a shared goal of working towards it.
