German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has shown an optimistic view after the events in Syria. “Our thoughts are with all the victims of the Assad regime today,” he said on Sunday evening at the Federal Chancellery.
In the end, Assad “brutally and violently suppressed his own people” and “thousands of lives were lost on his conscience,” the SPD politician said. The population has “experienced inhumane suffering under his rule.” Therefore, the end of this “is a good news first,” Scholz said.
Among the resistance fighters, “also extremist forces are present,” Scholz warned. “It now depends on whether Syria can live in law and order as quickly as possible,” the Chancellor said. All population groups and minorities must enjoy protection.
“Territorial integrity and sovereignty are of decisive importance for Syria’s future,” the Social Democrat emphasized. “The illegal interference of third parties must end, and Syria must live in peace with its neighbors,” Scholz said.
“A comprehensive national dialogue, an orderly transition process, and a political solution to the conflict in Syria are possible,” the Chancellor said. Together with international partners and on the basis of the Security Council resolution of the United Nations, Germany will contribute to this, the SPD Chancellor candidate said.
