After the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market on December 20, a total of 615,227.91 euros have been donated to the city’s special account for those affected so far. The amount is distributed among 5,640 donors, according to a statement from the city administration on Saturday, with an average donation of around 110 euros.
“The willingness to donate from the population is impressive and a further sign of the great cohesion, the broad support, and the sense of community that we are currently feeling in many places in Magdeburg” said Mayor Simone Borris. Further donations are possible and welcome.
Meanwhile, the city administration is currently discussing how the donations can be distributed as simply and legally as possible to the affected parties. In addition to the distribution of the donations and the planning of a central memorial site, the investigation of the circumstances of the attack on the Christmas market will also be a central theme in the city administration over the next few weeks. The state capital will not, according to its own statement, “participate in speculation and premature blame-shifting” as it was said. The official investigations should be awaited.
