The Unseen Humanitarian Stampede at Our Doorstep?

Germany’s Special Envoy for the Federal Government on Migration Agreements, Joachim Stamp (FDP), has expressed a cautious view on potential new cooperation for the return of Syrian citizens following the regime’s collapse in Syria. “The fall of Assad may possibly open up new perspectives in migration cooperation. However, it is still too early to outline concrete measures,” Stamp told the Rheinische Post (Tuesday). “The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is reacting wisely and prudently by not making any decisions about Syria for the time being,” he said. He added, “I have consistently maintained the stance that no negotiations are possible with the mass murderer Assad, but we are continuously monitoring the situation in Syria. Now, a new situation has emerged faster than most expected.” Whether this could lead to a sustainable migration partnership, however, is still completely open, Stamp said.
