The mayor of Ostelsheim in Baden-Württemberg, Ryan Alshebl, a Syrian refugee who fled to Germany in 2015 and was elected mayor in 2023, has criticized Jens Spahn’s proposal to offer 1,000 euros and a free flight to Syrian refugees returning to their homeland. Alshebl described Spahn’s statement as “making an issue out of people’s lives and fates, which is quite cheap, I must say.”
Spahn, a German politician, had suggested that the government offer a one-time payment of 1,000 euros and charter flights for those who choose to return to Syria, as a way to encourage young men to contribute to rebuilding their country.
Alshebl, however, believes that the majority of Syrian refugees would return to their homeland if the situation allowed it, but stressed that the main reason they fled was to seek protection, not to return. “Most Syrians I know would go back if the opportunity arises. It’s understandable” he said.
The mayor emphasized that Germany is a welcoming country, but many Syrians came here seeking safety. “The objective reason they fled is now gone. The war is over. We should make sure that those who want to go back can do so voluntarily, without Spahn’s starter package.
