German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has called for a stronger German engagement in Syria. After the fall of the Assad regime, he said, “We must now focus on the HTS militias.” In an interview with the ARD “Tagesthemen” on Wednesday, Pistorius emphasized the importance of giving the HTS a chance to do what is needed now, while also being prepared with other European partners to contribute to the stabilization of the region in the interest of security and to prevent the resurgence of ISIS or its fighters.
Syria has a special significance for the region, the Defense Minister explained. Strengthening the presence in the region could, for example, mean that Germany increases its military capacities in the training of security forces and the armed forces in Iraq, if that is desired by the Iraqi government. “It could also mean that we work together with the new power holders in Syria” Pistorius said, adding that it is crucial to be clear about “where the journey in Syria is heading”.
On Wednesday, Pistorius met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani in Baghdad, and emphasized that the stabilization of the region is not just about military presence, but also political presence. “Germany cannot afford to be a spectator here” he said. “Every misstep benefits the wrong forces, destabilizes the region, and drives people to flee.” Regarding the Turkish attacks in the Kurdish-dominated regions in northern Syria, Pistorius made it clear that steps that escalate the situation must be avoided.
