After the fall of the Assad regime, FDP general secretary Marco Buschmann has expressed support for providing Syrian refugees in Germany with the prospect of returning to their homeland. “We need an international Syria conference, which should be launched from Germany” he told the Funke Media Group newspapers (Tuesday editions).
“This can open up a perspective for the many people who have fled to us to return to their homeland.” As the goal of the conference, Buschmann named “increasing the chances that, after endless years of civil war, peace and security can return to Syria once more”. This, he said, is a humanitarian concern and a top priority of German foreign policy guided by national interests.
