German Federal Minister of the Environment Klara Geywitz (SPD) is pushing for a quick solution in the debate about a debt relief regulation for municipalities. “I am convinced that we need a solution for the debt problem of the indebted municipalities” Geywitz said to the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday edition). “Especially in North Rhine-Westphalia, the debts are pressing.” She added, “By the way, not just there, but also in the eastern German states, the housing market is suffering under the debt burden.” “I am sure that the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia has an interest in a debt relief regulation. There are already talks between the Federal Minister of Finance and North Rhine-Westphalia” Geywitz said. “We need a broad majority in the end, because it won’t work without a constitutional amendment.”
At the same time, Geywitz expressed hope that the so-called “Bau-Turbo” of the failed Ampel coalition can still be brought through the Bundestag. She hopes that it will “still pass with the votes of other democratic factions” Geywitz said. “The Union has said that it will only talk to us after the confidence vote. That means they are generally willing to implement something, and that’s a good sign” Geywitz said. “The FDP is still in the Bundestag, and they also supported the Bau-Turbo” the SPD politician said.
