AfD’s Federal Executive Board Officially Nominates Alice Weidel as Chancellor Candidate

The AfD’s federal executive board has officially nominated party co-chair Alice Weidel as the party’s chancellor candidate for the upcoming federal election. The proposal was adopted “unanimously” by the party’s executive committees, said AfD co-chair Tino Chrupalla in Berlin on Saturday.

The decision was “harmonious”, he added. He personally was “not just fine, but very fine” with Weidel’s nomination. Chrupalla also mentioned a task allocation between the party leaders, with Weidel as the “striker” and him as the “libero”.

Weidel expressed her gratitude “from the bottom of her heart for the trust placed in her”. She emphasized economic and energy policy issues as the main focus of her campaign. She reiterated her criticism of the transition to renewable energy and electromobility.

The nomination will be confirmed at a party convention in Riesa in January. The AfD is nominating a party leader as a chancellor candidate for the first time, Weidel said, aiming to clearly demonstrate the party’s government aspirations.
