The United States and Germany have announced plans to send armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine, marking a significant change in policy for Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz. Scholz had previously hesitated to provide Ukraine with heavy weaponry due to concerns that it could involve NATO in the ongoing conflict. However, pressure on Scholz to alter his stance increased after France’s President Emmanuel Macron agreed to supply Ukrainian forces with “tank killer” AMX-10s. The US will supply Ukraine with Bradley fighting vehicles as part of the joint effort. At the same time, Germany will provide Marder infantry fighting vehicles and join the US in sending a Patriot missile battery. Both countries also plan to train Ukrainian forces on their respective systems. The Ukrainian government has welcomed the move but is expected to continue requesting more military aid.
