NATO countries will discuss their defense spending targets in the coming months as some of them call for the 2% target to be brought back to a minimum figure.
This is what NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said
“Some allies are strongly in favor of returning the current 2% target to a minimum,” Stoltenberg said in an interview published on Tuesday.
Stoltenberg said he will lead the negotiations.
“We will meet, we will have ministerial meetings, we will have talks in the capitals”, he emphasized.
However, he did not indicate which NATO countries were calling for a more ambitious target.
The NATO chief said he aimed to reach an agreement no later than the next regular NATO summit, which will be in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, on July 11-12.
