China’s military held large-scale joint strike drills, sending warplanes and navy ships to Taiwan, the defense ministries of China and Taiwan said.
The exercise coincided with a visit by a group of German lawmakers who landed in Taiwan on Monday morning.
At the head of the delegation is Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, who heads the Defense Committee of the German Parliament.
German lawmakers will meet with Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, as well as the head of Taiwan’s National Security Council and other officials.
China has increased its pressure on Taiwan’s military in recent years by sending warplanes or navy ships almost daily to the self-ruled island. China claims sovereignty over the island, which was separated from China in 1949 after a civil war.
