Zelensky calls for the demilitarization of Zaporizhzhia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on IAEA inspectors to force Russian forces to demilitarize the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and immediately return it to Ukrainian control.

Officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) traveled last week to this nuclear plant, from where they warned that “there is an urgent need” to take measures to prevent any nuclear incident at this plant, which is also the largest in Europe.

Zelensky has called for nuclear safety and a buffer zone to be created around the plant, as fears of physical damage to the plant as a result of Russian bombing have grown.

During the most recent address, Zelensky emphasized that when Russia has put the world on the brink of nuclear catastrophe – it is up to the world to take the necessary measures to ensure that Russia must stop the terror.

“I believe that the world not only deserves but also needs the representatives of the IAEA to force Russia to demilitarize the territory around Zaporizhzhia, and to return it under the control of Kiev”, added the Ukrainian president.

On the other hand, the IAEA has announced that they have closely seen the damage to the asphalt surface – walls and windows of the nuclear power plant – as well as in the connecting units of the reactor.
