City authorities in the South African coastal city of Durban ordered the closure of the city’s northern beach after a large wave hit the shore, killing three people, emergency officials said.

“The emergency medical service responded to reports of a ‘freak wave’ crashing into a group of swimmers on the beach right next to the pier, causing them multiple injuries,” said emergency service spokesperson Njabulo Dlunge.

“Unfortunately, three people, including a teenager, were pronounced dead at the scene,” Dlungele said.

At least 17 other people were taken to various medical facilities for their injuries, Nlungele said, adding that more than 35 rescuers participated in the operation to save more than 100 people who were in the path of the large wave.

The municipal authorities have announced a local investigation into this case.
