The US will allocate $3 billion in new aid to Ukraine

The United States is expected to make public an additional military aid package for Ukraine of about three billion dollars.

US officials said the new package will be announced on Wednesday, the day the war in Ukraine reaches the six-month mark. The $3 billion arms aid package would be the largest such aid package the US has offered to Ukraine since the war began on February 24.

The money will be used to train and equip Ukrainian forces to fight for years to come, as well as to finance contracts for drones, weapons and other equipment that may not see the front line for a year or two, the sources said.

Unlike most previous aid packages, the new funding will be aimed at helping Ukraine meet its future defense needs, according to officials familiar with the matter. Previous packages focused on Ukraine’s most immediate needs for arms and ammunition.

The new package aims to reassure Ukrainian officials that the US is committed to maintaining its support, despite the day-to-day conflict, the officials said.
