The first victim in Europe from monkeypox is confirmed.

Spain has reported its first monkeypox-related death in what is the first known casualty in Europe and the second outside Africa in the current outbreak.

The country’s Ministry of Health confirmed the death today, but did not immediately provide further details about the person.

Brazil reported the first monkeypox-related death outside the African continent in the current outbreak earlier Friday.

In its latest report, the Spanish health ministry said 4,298 cases had been confirmed in the country.

Of the 3,750 patients for whom information was available, it said 120 had been hospitalized — or 3.2 percent — and one had died, without giving further details.
