Slovenia can elect a female president for the first time

Slovenia looks set to elect its first female president in Sunday’s election.

The liberal candidate Natasa Pirc Musar is expected to win tomorrow’s presidential runoff in the small Central European country, perhaps becoming the first female head of state in Slovenia.

All polls suggest the 54-year-old lawyer has a big lead in the runoff against her centre-right opponent, former foreign minister Anze Logar.

None of the seven contenders managed to collect more than 50% of the votes in the first round and thus secure victory, meaning that Logar and Pirc Musar continued in the runoff.

The winner will succeed President Borut Pahor, a centrist who aimed to bridge Slovenia’s left-right political divide during his decade in office.

He cannot seek a third term, as rules limit presidents to two five-year terms.

The head of state is seen as a position of authority and influence in Slovenia, although it is primarily a ceremonial role.
