Russian head of Lukoil dies after ‘falling from sixth floor’

Lukoil

The president of Russian oil giant Lukoil, Ravil Maganov, has died after falling from a hospital window in Moscow. The company confirmed his death, but said only that Maganov, 67, “passed away after a serious illness”.

Russian media said he was being treated at Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital and died of his injuries. Maganov is the latest in a number of high-profile business leaders to die under mysterious circumstances.

Investigating authorities said they were working at the scene to determine how he died. The Tass news agency quoted sources as saying he had fallen from a sixth-floor window early in the morning, adding later that he had killed himself.

Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, Lukoil’s board called for the conflict to end as soon as possible, expressing sympathy for the victims of “this tragedy”.

Its billionaire president, Vagit Alekperov, resigned in April after Britain imposed sanctions on him in response to the invasion.

He started working at the private oil company in 1993 and took over as chairman two years ago. Three years ago he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Maganov had been receiving treatment at a hospital on the western outskirts of Moscow, which is known for providing patients to Russia’s political and business elite.

Mikhail Gorbachev died at the Central Clinical Hospital on Tuesday while Putin visited the site on Thursday morning to lay flowers next to his coffin.
