Many Russian troops have left the Chernobyl plant.

Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear company Energoatom says many of the Russian troops holding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant have left.

Energoatom said the outgoing Russian forces were heading towards the border with Belarus, leaving only a handful of troops on the territory of the missing plant – the site of the worst nuclear disaster in the world in 1986.

“The occupiers, who took over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the excluded area, have launched in two columns towards the Ukrainian border,” Energoatom said in a statement.

They added that Russian troops had also withdrawn from the nearby town of Slavutych, where Ukrainian workers live in Chernobyl.

Russian troops took control of the Chernobyl plant on the first day of Ukraine’s aggression by Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine had expressed security fears for the plant and the harsh conditions that trapped workers there had to endure.

Russia, however, denied that its forces were endangering nuclear facilities inside Ukraine.
