Greek-Turkish tensions deepen

Tensions between Greece and Turkey regarding the divided island of Cyprus are escalating.

Ankara has declared that it will increase its military presence on the island in response to Washington’s move to lift the arms embargo against the Greek-Cypriot administration.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu criticized the United States’ approach to Greece on Friday, saying it had become a toy of Athens when it comes to the Cyprus issue.

He emphasized that those who deal with Greece only to please it do not deserve to be friends of Turkey. But the American administration has expressed its support for Greece also regarding the clash with Ankara over the islands in the Aegean Sea.

“Greece’s sovereignty over these islands is not in question”, declared a few days ago the spokesman of the State Department, Ned Price.
