Gorgosaurus sold for $6 million at auction.

A rare ancient dinosaur skeleton has been sold in the US to an unknown buyer for just over $6 million.

It was sold at auction on Thursday in New York City.

The fossil is that of a Gorgosaurus that was discovered in 2018 and the anonymous buyer will have the unique opportunity to give it a nickname.

The sale is the second ever of a fossilized dinosaur skeleton auctioned by Sotheby’s.

The first, a T-rex nicknamed Sue, was sold to Chicago’s Field Museum in 1997 for $8.36 million.

Gorgosaurus is the only specimen of its kind offered in private ownership, and there are only 20 similar fossils known to exist worldwide.

The fossil was discovered on private land in the US state of Montana. It has 79 bone elements, is three meters high and about 6.7 meters long.
