Bangladesh blast kills at least 49 people.

A fire and a huge explosion have killed at least 49 people and injured hundreds more at a warehouse near Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Hundreds of people mobilized to put out the fire when a number of transport containers exploded in an area in Sitakunda.

It is thought that chemicals were stored in some of the containers.

Industrial fires are common in Bangladesh, and poor safety regulations are often blamed.

Many of the injured are said to be in critical condition and the death toll is expected to rise.

Hospitals in the area are overcrowded, with crowds of people waiting in the hallway for treatment. Doctors have appealed for blood donation and some of the injured were airlifted to the capital Dhaka.

The fire broke out around 21:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Saturday and hundreds of firefighters, police and volunteers rushed to the scene.

As they tried to put out the fire, a huge explosion shook the country, including many of the rescuers in the flames and throwing debris and people into the air.
